St. Anger Sucks That Bad?
Published June 02, 2003
Whoa. And I thought I didn't like Metallica since before Reload. Phil Freeman over at Cleveland Scene REALLY doesn't. Well, at least not the new album, St. Anger. I haven't heard it yet, but after his blistering review, I'd like to write my own.
- St. Anger is definitely the noisiest, ugliest record Metallica's ever made. It scrapes and slams and crunches and screeches. Lars Ulrich's drums crash like empty barrels whacked with steel rods. James Hetfield's guitar chops the air with the fury of a prizefighter. (Kirk Hammett's guitar, by contrast, is apparently sitting in Jason Newsted's garage — there's not one solo anywhere on this album.) The vocals are sometimes distorted, like Ministry's; other times, though, Hetfield's voice cracks, as he strains for long-lost notes.
- The mix is punishing. Too often, the guitars and drums blend into a wall of raw noise. Sitting and listening to this record (under the gimlet eye of a surly, paranoid publicist — Lars's hatred of the internet forbade mailing advance copies to critics) isn't cathartic, the way the old albums were. It's painful. Eventually, you start wanting to escape, to run from the noise and let a different room's empty, silent air caress your eardrums, like cool water after a too-hot, too-big meal.
And that's just part of the review. Any of you guys heard this yet?

I heard the single on the radio and it was horrible..just absolutely horrible. I couldn't believe they even played it on the radio.
ST. Anger really is about a lot of noise and "Anger". There are no redeeming qualitys on this album. Metalica will be lucky to even get a gig at a nightclub after hearing this crap. Sheesh, they are totally out of touch with reality.
big metallica fan.. well i used to be before st. anger anyway.. it sounds unorganized, people say it sounds like "old school" metallica, but atleast the old stuff was audible and sounded awesome. this album sounds sloppy to say the least. i'm severely disappointed
WoW
what a "LOAD" of Crap.
Wanna know what i think, i think metallica sold out. Did a half assed cd just to srunge up as much money as they can before they leave and finally retire.
Maybe makeup for the losses of those Napster days.
Think about it they hyped it up on the ICOn awards just so people buy it without really listening it 2 it because it is "Metallica"
I still love the band. And Justice For All and the black album and ride the lighting are still my favorites
"Looks like somebody should give James a drink of VODKA and bring back the old Metallica"
what a piece of shit. i am very angry at metallica for wasting away their talents on this crap of an album. i think impellitteri, yngwie, symphony x, and dream theater should be good substitutions for this once good band.
check out impellitteri's new album "system x". graham bonnet sings in it.the later bands really have talent and should be listend to.
To Nitro: Fool, they are selling out stadiums. Don't look for them to appear at Joe's bar anytime soon.
To Dj xtc: You said: "Looks like somebody should give James a drink of VODKA". Nice. I hope neither you, nor anyone in your family ever has to deal with drug or alcohol addiction.
To God: Your short list of wank bands don't impress anybody but the geeks at Guitar Center
Have any of you dweebs realized that this was the sound they were going for? If you don't like it, there's 10 people waiting in line behind you who will. After hearing the album, I also wished I could hear these songs with all the pro-tools, big production, and bells and whistles. It would have been cool for them to have done that, and also released the dvd with the rougher versions. But that's just me, and my wishes don't mean jack poopy. But since the rest of you jizz gobblers are dissing the album, I will say "A STAGGERING WORK OR UNBRIDLED ENTHUSIASM".
"Fool, they are selling out stadiums."
Yeah, well, so is Yanni.
what's hard to take about this album is that they TRIED to make it sound this way. The songs, they sound like good crunchy balls to the walls metal songs, but the production totally kills it. I've heard indie metal releases that sound a lot better than this. I would love to hear the songs mixed correctly, eq'ed better(especially that tin can snare drum that just overpowers EVERYTHING), and it's like James' voice is way out too much in the mix(and it sounds weak at times too...which sucks because I love his voice). Over all, I don't think anyone's complaing about the songs(except for maybe a lame lyric here and there.."I'm madly in anger with you"? what the hell is that?), the "production" really what hinders this disc. the hardest part is knowing they tried to make it sound like that
-----Comment on St. Anger------
Good god i'm dissapointed. Not one freakin' solo or suitable melody!NOT ONE! But it's not really that, it doesnt really matter if a song has a solo as long as it captures you. But c-mon man this cd is not metallica at all. "Master of Puppets", "To live is to die"..what the fuck happened??!! these are bad ass songs and they sound nothing like ST. ANger. Seriously, I was in utter discontempt when me and my friend got home anxiously popped the dvd in, and we just looked at each other wordlessley between songs.
Well after owning all of the albums, I usually only listened to metallica. I put them on a pedastal. I bought this cd and I wanted to be shot again and again becuase this cd im sorry to be blunt but sucked. I work at circuit city, and I saw two kids buying it, and I felt sorry for them wasting the money on it. It is laying in my car just collecting dust. I really hope this isnt the end of metallica. They were so good. What happened.
To Mike, if that's really your name (comment 8, Yeah, well, so is Yanni):
Kudos to you, my good fellow, for a stinging zinger, and drawing the agreeance of the alluringly rubinesque Amber. You have exposed me as the not so bright bulb of the econopack. But sir, it is you who ride the musical shortbus! First, your rude and insensitive comment was misplaced and irrelevant, as I was simply pointing out to Nitro (a nom de plur, no doubt, and not the name his parents gave him!) that Metallica would not be playing the corner bar anytime soon. I can verify this, as I called the corner bar this very afternoon, and they substantiated that, indeed, Metallica will not be appearing there this weekend. They do, however, have a saturday night regular who will dance on the bar naked for spare change-no cover charge. Anyway, I also checked with Yanni's tour manager, and it turns out he does not play stadiums, at least not in this country! So Mike,(if that's really your name) as I have proven your callous statement as false as your friends and family's love for you, I await your apology!
Bricklayer, for a guy with tattoos not into his fourth decade of existence on this coil of mortals, but who possesses many yet longs for more Now! you sure are funny.
Worst Metallica album I have ever heard. The rhythm of the songs sucks so bad, that I sometimes wonder if it is playing in reverse.
Maybe if I could play the songs backwards it would sound better.
What a stinkfest. Old Metallica my anus. Old instruments maybe. Is that a kettle drum I hear?
Save your money.
Oh crap! I've been called "alluringly rubinesque" by the Bricklayer. Golden.
And dude. You are the only other person in existence who says "aggreance" other than Fred Durst. Hahaha.
Do I know you anyway?
this thread is classic.
peace.
Fair Amber,
Alas, you do not know me, and nay, we shall never meet, not even in the pit at a Converge show. But I am a fan of your very own Website (though not of those scurrilous rapscallions whose company you keep-they are not worthy of you!) It is like watching the hardcore kids real world, only on a computer. A request if I may: Please return the photo exhibits. Your work is superb. And I don't really mean the pics of sweaty gorillas grunting into microphones, and banging on electric guitars (though they are fine indeed), but rather your non-musically themed shots, as they are quite nice to look at while sipping 1/2 caffienated coffee in the early morn, as the cleaning man swirls his vacuum betwixt my feet.
Bricklayer, you should go post some on my messageboard. Keep those scurrilous rapscallions in line, ya know?

:)
Amber,
I am far too old and slow of wit to parry and thrust with the likes of those young turks. However, I will continue to admire your efforts.
Minor Threat
We're not the first, I hope we're not the last
'Cause I know we're all heading for that adult crash
The time is so little, the time belongs to us
Why is everybody in such a fucking rush?
Make do with what you have
Take what you can get
Pay no mind to us
We're just a minor threat
WE'RE JUST A MINOR THREAT
Early to finish, I was late to start
I might be an adult, but I'm a minor at heart
Go to college, be a man, what's the fucking deal?
It's not how old I am, it's how old I feel
Take your time
Try not to forget
We never will
We're just a minor threat
WE'RE JUST A MINOR THREAT
Bricky, it would appear you are content to be a commentator on the commentators on the commentators of our culture.
Oh man he's posting Minor Threat lyrics. He DOES know me.
Sigh. I love that song.
I feel protective and proud of my little Amber - she is my daughter's age. I believe we should view her with an avuncular eye.
Mr. O,
It appears you have nailed it. Your analysis of me is as iron clad and true as the certainty that I will be the oldest person in attendance at tonights In Flames/Soilwork/Chimera/Unearth show, that I will be disgusted by the cigarette smoke and indifferent attitudes, and that I will feel sleepy as the hour approached ten o'clock, and wish I was home in bed. And yet, I will go back for more!
Oh, and one more thing, I do not know what the termm "avuncular" means, but I am in total agreeance that Amber is deserving of nothing but the utmost respect for her work.
Superannuation in the pursuit of liberty is no vice, I state proudly!
...i really have no idea what turned this thread into a "lets compliment amber" session, but I wanna join the fray...
amber rocks.
(yeah, not very creative, but well-meant)
peace.
This is utterly bizzarre and really great at the same time.
And to think, the post wasn't even my review!
Ahh well. This is fun anyway.
Oh, and In Flames and Soilwork in the same night? whew I envy you.
Metal.
"avuncular" - of, like, or pertaining to uncle
Yo, Mr. Theory:
I find digression from the intended topic most appealing (much like my one time hero Holden Caufield), as I lack the smarts to make a worthy comment on most topics. Therefore, I post a supercilious (see, I don't even know if I used that word right!) comment in an attempt to bring things down to my level.
Mr. O: Thank you for the new word for Uncle.
Amber: I shall give the double goat horn salute in your honour.
Without digression I would have hardly any gression at all.
i do that, too, bricklayer.
peace.
I almost blew chunks when I first heard that sorry excuse for a song. Metallica clearly has turned their backs on their true fans. I'll quote Lars, "We can't carry those old fans anymore, We have to keep going." Only a selfish prick like Lars would think that HE carries his fans. I guess he's basically buying his own records and giving them away to HIS "peasant" fans. Without their early fanbase Metallica would just be some cow disease. I'll still listen to my old cd's but I'll never pay a dime for another piece of Metallica shit again. Kudos to Jason Newstead for leaving these clowns.
I didn't St Anger was that bad, I'd give it five out of ten. But it's hard to believe it was the same band who made utterly killer albums like Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets. And its sound kind of whiny, half-arsed and weak. The riffs are cliched and to be honest any dude jamming in his garage could probably come up with better riffs than what they have. If you play something like Pantera's Far Beyond Driven or Sepultura's Roots after listening to St Anger it sounds pretty weak by half arsed by comparison. Those two albums are undeniably killer metal albums and fucking heavy. They hit you right off the bat.You shouldn't have to try and like something that just isn't good metal. I hate to say it, but Metallica has well and truly lost it.
Well i do have to admit this album isn't nearly as good a quality as some of the astonishing masterpieces that once made me a metallica fan, were.
What is going on with James' voice? I watched the entire "Rock am ring" concert in germany too and that tear in his voice at high notes nearly made me cry. I sympathize for metallica, that, after all they've been through, the voice that drove it, can't carry anymore.
Regards,
Marco.
its the gayest, stupidest, fuked up piece of shit ever fuking made. It is ass rippingly excrutiating to listen to and it has NO solos at all.
"Gayest"? That's more stupid than you claim St. Anger to be.
Sounds like Koosta is penning lyrics to some death metal of his own ;)
I thought this CD was better than I had expected (at first unimpressive, but I agree with the sentiment that it grows on you as mentioned by others above), although I too wish there was a guitar solo or two. What's a metal album without a grinding axe?
Though I will also admit I can't understand most the lyrics unless I consult the CD insert.
I have never in my life been so dissapointed in a band that I once thought was decent.I thought and still think that load was and is the best metallica cd there is because it was ballsy and different and they were taking a chance and steping forward when they released it. It also was spawned from emotion.I stuck up for metallica after all of there fans said they were selling out. Now after the load albums they release saint anger. An entire cd that sounds like it was put together on a whim. All they talk about anymore is pleasing their fans and worrying what peaple will think. THis is a huge step backward.I blame a lot of this on bob rock.Metallica have gotten to where they will do anything bob rock tells them to do. In this case he said just go in the studio and jam around wing some lyrics and take a break. Since it says metallica the fans will buy it as long as its heavy. It doesnt have to be an intelligent album. FUCK metallica and FUCK bob rock. Now I join the legions of fans who say theve sold out. They have lost all of my respect.
Metallica has totally screwed over all there true fans.
If it wasnt for there true fans than they wouldnt be nowhere.
Nobody wants to hear millionaires whining. There not angry there loaded so they should just shut the hell up and find something more interesting to sing about (there is a war going on right?) Metallica gave a big FUCK YOU to all there true fans in order to get radio play.
Master of puppets best metal album ever.
I DONT FREAKIN CARE WHAT YALL SAY..... BUT I STILL ATLEAST LOVE METALLICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOME PEOPLE OUT THERE DO TO!!!!!BUT,
i THINK THERE NEW ALBUM ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!
I DONT CARE WHAT ANY OF YALL THINK!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE METALLICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DONT SEE HOW SOME OF YOU DONT LIKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DONT THINK IM WEIRD BECAUSE I LIKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!(Cheers to the people who like there new album and still love Metallica!!!:p)
Who do y'all think is tougher looking...Kirk Hammet or that chick from the Smashing Pumkins?
Kirk Hammet!!!!!!!!
Love the album and love the band. Guess it is just the "thing to do" now....bagging on Metallica like everyone seems to want to do. But you know what I dont understand.....???? If they suck sssssoooooooooo bad and EVERYONE hates them, why do they still sell out all these concerts?
Lata.
Well first off, I like music. Music is good. Yes of course. Now with that stated, I happened opon on the new Metallica when one of my friends purchased it. I grasped it thinking , wow this may be good. Anticipation grew as I slid it into the magical laser machine. My brief moment of happiness was raped and strangled. The sound of a thousand monkeys tearing out their anuses and shoving them down the closest primate's throat, came spewing out. Track after track was filled with the feces of cheezy, childish, static. This just goes to further my theory that music is dead. And a sad day for the world it is.
Music IS good, thanks. I missed the part about the monkeys when I listened to the CD - have to check it out again. Did they record the monkeys individually or were they in the studio all at the same time? If the latter, it must have been messy! Are the monkeys touring with them? Does PETA know about all this? I bet they'd be pissed.
Dear TheViirussX:
I think I love you.
Regards,
Bricklayer
I'm pretty sure TheViirussX must have gotten a defective copy. I hear no monkeys or anuses on mine. It seemed to be mostly music on mine. It's actually pretty good music, too, but I'm not so stuck on exactly how that music should sound that I can immediately write off what doesn't sound exactly the way I thought it should have.
Metallica fans. "True" Metallica fans, especially. It's amazing how "fans" can cry and beg for a band to get back to being "heavy" again, then when they do and don't sound exactly, perfectly, precisely like they did in 1987 they will blubber about how it's a sellout. Wouldn't it have been a sellout to make something that sounds straight out of the 1983-87 era? I'm still surprised at the reaction to this album - the band shunned the "lighter" sound they'd been flirting with starting with the black album, and how do the fans react? I think it was great the band did this - if anything, it shows them how fickle and fair-weather their fans really are. And in a few years they'll give the album another chance and be surprised at how much they actually like it - because that's exactly what's happened with Load and Reload. Maybe they're not masterpieces like And Justice For All and Master Of Puppets, but they're actually pretty good albums, with a few real dud songs on each.
I say, if you closed-minded morons want more "Whiplash," go listen to Kill 'Em All. That's what's great about recorded music - it's always there to listen to again whenever your "favorite" band lets you down again and again, so you can relive that tiny little fragment of your life over and over again.
"Fans." You gotta love 'em.
very well-said Tom, and I like it pretty well too, all raw and buzzing and weird and stuff - pretty audacious of them
it does seem like there's some heavy musical conservatism in lots of metal fans.
gee, it doesn't sound like Kill 'Em All...too fricken' bad.
i still like St. Anger...and the bonus dvd of them playing the stuff live in the studio is pretty cool.
anyone who says Metallica are sell-outs..your a fucking fag. St.Anger isnt a bad album at all. A band has to change sometime. If Metallica didnt change, people would blame them for doing the same shit.
So I support METALLICA!
METALLICA ROCKS
Metallica was the shit since '87 to 9# something, but since St. Anger it's all only about shit, i mean what the hell is that???
To Marco Colapietro... yeah you are totally right... A Band has to change sometime, but you dont know that they have to change for good, not for this whole crap that metallica recorded recently, this aint a change, this is suicide!! so if metallica knew that they had to change, they all should have knew that the band needed new and improved changes, they should know how to use their talent, but they didnt... so what's your pont now
And of course, weather Dream Theater or Symphony would be perfect to remplace this band, i'd rather Romeo from Symphony X as guitar player instead John Petrucci from Dream Theater, though Jordan Rudess is the best Keyboard Player in the whole world!! And dont forget about Mike Portnoy!! The God of the Drums!!!!!!!
If somebody'd like to listen to some progressive rock in spanish, you can feel free to visit our (my band's) website, dont forget to sign the sign book, see y'all.

Oh. My. God. I cant believe anybody has the balls to defend this musical travesty!! To me, Metallica Meant something. Awesome Lyrics, Incredible Music are apparently a thing of the past for Metallica. I was ANXIOUS to hear this release. When I finally heard the single, I HOPED it was just the one bad song on the cd. It turned out to be just as god awful as the rest. This has to be the most pathetic piece of crap released on the market since M.C. Hammer Decided to go "gangsta"... I mourn the loss of a once great band , along with the majority of lost metallica fans.
After I bought St. Anger and Listened to it the only thought in my mind was "St. Anger Sucks". I then typed "St. Anger Sucks" into Google to make sure I was not alone or insane in my observation. Google led me here.
Bleah, Kirk Hammet needs to start his own band so he can play his guitar again. I dont think it was plugged in for this album :(
I think the only thing that keeps Metallica on anyone's radar is their live shows, they havejn't put out a consistently good album since the Black Album.
Anyone who actually enjoys St. Anger must be completely deaf or probably doesn't know crap about heavy metal at all. How can anyone say that this album rocks? It's not even heavy, let alone worthy of headbanging to. Their new music is very weak, poorly produced, sloppily arranged, and inferior to the likes of Shadows Fall, In Flames, Iced Earth, Children of Bodom, Killswitch Engage, Dark Tranquility, Death Angel, Exodus, Superjoint Ritual, Testament, Soilwork, Primal Fear, Hammerfall, Death, Gamma Ray, Pantera, Slayer, Meshuggah, and any other REAL metal band I could list if I felt like it. These washed up has-beens should just retire while they still have some dignity. James Hetfield sounds like a reject country singer, Kirk Hammett plays like someone in a middle school garage band who just hits the same downtuned power chords redundantly, Bob Rock on bass isn't exactly the next Flea, and Lars' drumming sounds like pots and pans being banged on, and his style is WAY behind today's metal scene. I'd like to hear Lars pull off the incredibly difficult, fast, and technical drumming of...say, Dave Lombardo (Slayer/Testament/Grip Inc.), or maybe Richard Christy (Iced Earth/Death/Control Denied). He couldn't even do that back in the 1980s. Kirk Hammett USED to play very well, but of course, he told everyone that playing guitar solos isn't cool anymore. Well, if that's true, then why are so many popular bands out there still playing solos...not to mention solos that are superior to Kirk's? Stick a fork in these guys, they're done! The last good music Metallica wrote was in 1988, and everything after that was sub par. Sure, "true" Metallica fans will buy anything from Metallica, regardless of how rotten it is. Hell, Metallica could release a country or rap album and their most "dedicated" fans will still support them! One guy on here made the comment that, "A band has to change sometime". Well maybe so, but they should change for the BETTER, not worse! Their music has only grown weaker within every album, and they have only given in to what corporate America expects, rather than their fans. Look at Testament; they have been around as long as Metallica, and they've only gotten heavier and more aggressive. Judas Priest has been around a decade LONGER than Metallica, and they've become heavier too. Another guy on here said, "If Metallica sucks so bad, then why do they sell out so many concerts"? Probably because the name METALLICA is on the bill, not because of the quality of their new album. Also, at Metallica concerts, about 90% of the material they play are songs from their first five albums, which of course were what made them popular. Some people are really gullable to Metallica, and St. Anger proves it with every positive review it gets.
If Metallica truly were sellouts, wouldn't they have recorded exactly what you guys keep bitching about? Wouldn't they just have come up with . . . More Justice, Master II, Ride More Lightning, or Kill More of 'Em? St. Anger isn't perfect, but I think the majority of the people complaining really couldn't get past the quality of the recording itself, not the music - I agree, it's rough, very rough. The lyrics are pretty spotty too, but I've never listened to Metallica for their lyrics, either. It's also over-long - some songs should have ended minutes earlier than they do, but they keep going on and on. But sellout? No, not at all - what this band has done was pretty ballsy, really, because they had to have known while putting it together that it might alienate the more fickle fans. Good, I say - bands need to shed the weight of these unpleasable fans more often.
All of you guys would have been unhappy with anything the band put out - You beg them to redo things they've already done to death, but if they'd written more stuff like the first four albums, you'd bitch about how they're out of ideas. They write an unrelentingly heavy album and you bitch because it doesn't sound just like everything else they've done.
More than anything, I think this is fallout from the Napster lawsuit. That soured fans on the band immediately, and this is how fans get back. I said it earlier in these comments and I'll say it again - you will hear this album years from now and you'll find that you don't feel so acidic towards it. Even your holy black album got a reaction like this from "hardcore" fans - and look how it's received today. I still contend that it's a spotty album - I still listen to the Loads over all those bloated, excessive arena rock, lighter-waving anthems. That album, if any, is the real Metallica sellout. Personally, I hope Metallica writes something else along the lines of St. Anger just to slough off the rest of you hangers-on. Go find something else to fetishize.
Listen this album isnt the greatest, but there were a few good songs. The album would sound great live. I still like leper mesiah and One hard stuff that sounds good. The thing i didnt like is that they sounded (musicly) like slipnknot example-invisable kid. I kindf of feel bad for James but i dont really understand why he and his band-mates are so angry. Its not like there serving in the military-well thats another story. These guys are millionares and they need therapy? What the hell is going on counseling for Metallica. Now there trying to profit out of their anguish? ie-Some kind Of Monster tahe movie and then the EP. That really pisses me of, that kind of stuff really shouldnt happen but i guess WB needs some dough. Metallicas first five albums were there better days. That includes the so called sell-out black album. In my opinion Bob Rock did metallica in its not like tehy enjoyed making the black album, despite the success. Load/was an average album.(even though it won grammys) Reload was an album to build of loads success (sound wise), and come up with that type of album again would really sell records it did me in. In short Metallica had their time and its time to move on people.
Look, no one is expecting Metallica to release another 'Ride the Lightning' or 'Master of Puppets'. All we want is QUALITY! Is that asking much? Let's face it, 'St. Anger' is a sloppy mess of an album that didn't even deserve to be recorded; the songs are too long and repetitive, the lyrics are stupid, the guitars are weak, and the drumming is pathetic. Every song is thrown together with simplicity. I can teach a damn 10 year old how to play the songs on 'St. Anger', anyone can! Seriously, how can anyone with any intelligence at all call 'St. Anger' heavy? Dashboard Confessional is heavier than that crap, and they suck too! Metallica should've just retired after the Black album, because everything after that is slow and has nothing to do with metal. Actually, I pretty much gave up on Metallica when 'Load' was released, but when Metallica lied and claimed that their "new album" would be a return to their "old roots", I checked it out for myself, and I couldn't be more disgusted. These guys fit right in with the wretched radio rock scene (Linkin Park, Korn, Disturbed, and any other band who call themselves metal). Oh well, at least there's heavier music out there, such as Shadows Fall, Soilwork, Children of Bodom, Meshuggah, Lamb of God, Kataklysm, Nile, Origin, Old Man's Child, Nevermore, Hypocrisy, Exodus, the list goes on! These bands make everything Metallica has ever done look pathetic.
For me, the last good album they made was ...And Justice for All. From then on it sucks major ass.
For everyone wondering WTF has happened to Metallica...Cliff died.
St. Anger is the first Metallica album I didn't buy. I listened to the song "St. Anger" once and I knew... it's OVER.
James ran out of things to say and he was never a great metal singer. The production (at least on that song, and folks in here seem to be saying the whole record sounds like this) is wretched. James' guitar sounds horrible and Lars' drumming (which used to be a high point) sounds WORSE. And I thought it was Newstead who left. Where the fuck is Kirk?
They are now a jukebox act. They can sell out stadiums playing their classics. No one wants to hear the new shit anymore.
I listened to this pile of doo quite a few times (as a reviewer is wont) and it never got any better. Time does not help either, its horrible and is a blotch on the good Metallica name.
Although I was pretty new to this kind of music, I had already listened to the songs like "the Four Horsemen", "Master of Puppets", "Fade to Black", "And justice for all", "One"(my favorite), "Blackened", "Sanatarium", Creeping Death", "the Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters", oh yeah forgot "Enter sandman" which I think is one of the last good songs by them.
The last album was crap for me too,
I like Kirk's good guitarplay but I
was dissapointed, couldn't hear anything but noise, the first album was
well arranged noise and their newer album even better, but after the Black album I haven't heard one really convincing song. I hope they'll make a
good comeback, otherwise it's farewell too the good ol' Metallica.
All hail shitallica.
They should had named the album "Nutallica". This album sucks, and if you like this, you either havn't listened to old metallica, or you've been listening to Lickin Pork too much. I heard that the drummer's drum set was stolen, and that he made his own drum set out of cans and bottles...wtf. And all those drugs screwed up Kirk... what a disgrace.
Megadeth > Metallica.
Dave Mustaine is the man.
WEll let me just say one thing ST ANGER SUCKS i am sorry to the ones that said that it was good becuase well ur wrong, i hope they are going to make an album as good as Kill Em All or the black Album or Master of puppets, and it would problably will because they are problably are going to make an album like Re load that was a good album that make up for Load, and hope they put solo's in it.
okay, lemme lay this down, ST ANGER IS A PIECE OF SHIT ALBUM THAT NEEDS TO BE BURNED EACH TIME A COPY IS RELEASED. yes, the band wanted the album to sound the way it did, im not dissing metallica AT ALL. they wanted it to be different than their other great albums, but yall guys that are dissin metallica all the way just bc of this album, are fuckin dumb assholes. just bc they chose to make their album sound different, doesnt mean they lost their talent. just cause kirk didnt have ne solos on the album, doesnt mean he doesnt have the talent to do so ne more, just cause lars's drums sounded like shit, doesnt mean he cant still play like a bad ass mofo, james's singing sucked on this album, but he sounded great on other albums, specially master of puppets, just cuz he sucked on this album, doenst mean he cant sound great ne more. so everybody that is dissing the whole band for this one shitty album, YOU ARE FULL OF SHIT.
Hey fools, didn't you see it the movie that they used to drink all the time? When they were drinking, they lost a member and that's why they are letting the "ANGER" out so that they won't be having problems in the future. Think about it. METALLICA rocks my world. I mostly like St. Anger because its the bomb. Fools you gotta start watching their biograghy. Watch MTV or go to Google to know about more Metallica. Here in Chefornak, Alaska, most boys here loves St. Anger. I am a big Metallica fan here. I try and play them, but some of them are hard for me. I watch the tabs from my friends and that's how I learn. Think about it fools.

Dudes...Lets just take it from the freakin top, Metallica were the best thing that happened to heavy metal when they started out...Kill Em All, Ride the Lightening,Master of Puppets etc etc...Then the 90s came along and they produced the black album and people started saying they sold out? i know people that actually stoped listening to them and havent listened since. if you play a musical instrument or have actualy listened Not heard but listened to it you would see that by far that the black album is their best album by talent, it all sincs up perfectley...Now, i know what you're thinkin, and of course it aint their best album by song standard but structurally and production wise it is. The band then brought out load some time later this too being a great album songs such as until it sleeps, fucking outlaw torn not to mention Bleeding me. But unfortunately never the less a sign of things to come...this was more prominent on the Re-Load album where you really can say only the first 5 songs should really recieve much credit if any at all...Lets face it Metallica are a band changing with time they have changed the style in which they write songs and at the end of the day aint a band that want to spew out the same old stuff even if thats all the fans want, i understand to a certain degree why they released this album and what it meant for them i also understand what James went through as many of my family are and were drug and alcohal dependant, those of you that think he should just have another drink and get the fuck on with it, i pitty for one day you may very well be in that same situation but worse and hey you may not have the help and determination that James had, and just for the record he did not quit drinkin for metallica and his fuckin fans you ignorant cunts!!! he done it for himself his friends and most of all his fuckin family!!! However St Anger does not rock my world i'm afraid to say...It aint metallica, i dont mean the old metallica i mean it just aint metallica...it's as if Kirk was bullied into not using solo's...to help you understand i have played guitar for 12 years now and it was metallica's fault...I cant read music and never use tab, I just listen, I would literally finish a 10 hour shift at the age of 14 come home and play guitar for anything between 8 and 10 hrs this went on for a 3 year stretch, i grew up on metallica and now the only band i listened to for 5 years straight has died. It would appear they will not write a new album it's only a matter of time before this is news. However we should be gratefull for the music they gave us up till now we should treat them with nothing but respect even although they have went along with the trend and technically sold out...Oh and again just for the record...They still sell out stadiums cause they are FUCKING METALLICA and they only really ever play 2 songs from St Anger at gigs...would be good to hear Diars Eve live for a change though!!! R.I.P Cliff, Oh and although it may be unrelated R.I.P Dime and Randy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers fuckers
Have a Nice day.
John.
Oh and Raph comment 69????
FUCK dave Mustain...More like Dave Mundane.
You almost make it sound good with all the references to loud, crushing fury, clearly that description is all wrong, but if you're saying it's shit, then I agree with you.
i think there is a big problem in music today. What happened to dynamic range?
this metallica record is a good example of what is the problem of music today. there is no sound quality in cd's no more. most cd's are too loud and too compressed. i hope we probably wake up out of this nightmare sommeday.
if you read this article on this link here, maybe a few more people would understand the real meaning of music and listing to music.
music is sommething verry beautiful if people threat it the right way
see ya all, take care
God what a sorry excuse for a record. Has anyone watched the documentary on this project (Some Kind of Monster)? Once you do it will become crystal clear why this was such a weak album. Metallica put ZERO energy into this project and they basically hate each other. Lars and James are like an old groucy married couple the way they bicker. They appear like nothing but rich, lazy, bored whiners who pay a therapist to follow them around all day to help them express their feelings. Sad.
Wow. Look. Listen to me.
That fuckin' snare. My lord. What was Bob Rock thinking. Someone needs to put him to bed. Please.
You all know it.
Also, there's a misconception going around. The fact is, it is NOT a bad album musically at all . . . just a horribly recorded and mixed record. It's all a real shame, because the lack of EQ'ing, dynamics, proper mixing, and vocal effects completely ruin the album.
No wonder they recruited Rick Rubin for the next one. But, let's remember . . . Rick's also doing the new Linkin Park record. Sad, heh? I wouldn't hold my breath for a future high-quality Metallica record. At least it'll be mixed better.
Feel me?
The band really should have called it quits after the black album, at least they would have been looked back at in time as legendary like Led Zeppelin or some shit... I still love their old classics but everything since load has been an embarrassment, they've lost the plot and they'll never ever regain what they once had.
I think the people who are arguing that Metallica have evolved are missing the point - sure they will never release anything like Puppets again, and we don't expect them to, and yes all bands have to move on, we accept that. However, St. Anger really is a poor effort, not because it's not what we want to hear from Metallica but because it is actually a crap album. Lets face it, any band producing this toss would be criticised, and if it hadn't been Metallica no one would have actually bought it.
Yeah, Metallica suck monkey balls now! They use to be great! now they lost all their old-school fans. All they have now is a bunch of little 16year old little brats that like them. I mean just because they sell a ton of C.D.s don't make them good. I mean fuck Mcdonalds sells a million burgers and it sucks major ass! So is it Walmart metal now? The Slayer god needs to come outta the sky and beat the living hell outta these wankers. whata Joke! CRY BABIES!
Moronica has always sucked. They started out as a cheap (and poorly done) imitation of NWOBHM bands that were big at the time (but not well known in the U.S.), and they had a little bit of potential. That potential, of course, quit/was fired and started Megadeth. After that they were boring, repetitive, lacking pretty much in every facet of technical skill, and have been nothing more than a cheesy trailer-trash band. To have ever been impressed at all by Metallica, you basically have to not know very many decent bands.
Metallica is, and always has been, nothing more than a poser band, always following a trend started somewhere else. They're kind of like Nirvana, but not as smelly.
Metallica still sells out concerts because they don't play st anger songs, they play their old shit that, to this day, blows any other music out of the water
Sounds like Lars traded his drum set for a bunch of pots and pans. MAN IT SUCKS
ok enuff babbling about fuckin metallica!!...the day james stopped fuckin drinking and the months he was on rehab and had a baby girl was the time metallica we once knew died...its all over...lars digs limp bizkit and james listens to pop rock...they lost the true metal spirit.....these dudes have changed for good...their attitudes changed..the way they think about music changed!!..i wish they still drank but not to the extent...alcohol was once their fuel and it made them genius musicians back then...its cool that they still make music but too bad its not worth listening to..i listened to that st anger album once and puked...that wasnt metallica...it sounded immature to me...ok so they cant stop making music because they cant fuckin do anything else ...they are forced because its their living...theyll live as musicians and theyll die as musicians ...and i guess they wanna be known as the greatest longest surviving rock band on the planet so theyll keep makin music ....dont even hope the next album would even sound like master of puppets cuz itll never happen...theres not even one song on st anger that has descent lyrics..all BS to me...jsut hopin itll be a lil bit better...since rick rubin produced slayers reign in blood album which is regarded as the best thrash metal album ever...but sad to say old james has lost his voice..kirk prefers to wahh wahh pedal a lot than create cool guitar runs and licks...lars drum setup sucks..sounds like fucking pounding trash cans to me...rob i dunno what to say...hes one of the best bassist around nowadays...but not very creative tho..cliff is still the man..anyway everybody just shut up and create your own band and make music u think is cool......metallica is boring..i still respect n thank them for inspiring me back in the day...enuff said..i just hope no one goes lunatic about this metallica sucking issue and becomes insane makin him get up on stage one day and shoot james kirk rob and lars for sucking like what that asshole nathan gale did to the late great dimebag darrell...its just music so dont get any serious..i bet metallica doesnt give a fuck who u are..ur just one fan out of a billion
Mmm, I am not the only one who didn't like St Anger. Let's hope Rick Rubin puts them back on track (he is producing their next album).
Btw, my own band's debut (not metal) is being produced by Flemming Rasmussen and I am so damn proud of that cause I grew up on those larger-than-life 80's Metallica albums.
Horns
Gorm
Saw the Some Kind Of Monster DVD and didn't bother to listen to the album.
The dude before me (by a long while though) Said it well...
And Justice For All was the last decent album. The black album was a turd, and it got worse and worse from there. St. Anger was even worse than Load...or RE-Load...damn, that's pretty bad.
I did buy Garage Inc, and I liked it..Well, The second disc, at least, which was just a bunch of unreleased stuff they did in the 80's. No wonder i liked it.
And yeah, I agree...Metallica pretty much went down with Cliff. And Justice For All was okay, but..it was their dying breath.
This albums makes baby jesus cry. Atleast it makes me cry. I am a big fan of what metallica did in the 80`s, but since then as everyone know they have been going downhill. The atrocious St. Anger was the final blow for the band. They went out with a noisy annoying impossible to listen to album. RIP Metallica.
More than four years later, and this album still hasn't been tolerated. With most 'so-so' songs from other bands, one can eventually overcome their problems and learn to accept it and maybe even enjoy it. St. Anger isn't at all like that. You cannot, no matter how many times you listen to it, get over the ridiculously detuned, punchy guitars or the banging of tin trash cans that Lars calls a drum kit.
I admit, I do like the rehearsal of Shoot Me Again which can be seen on their DVD that was included with the album. Makes me wonder: was the DVD added in there to help fans get over the obvious poor musicianship in St. Anger?
Metallica fans. "True" Metallica fans, especially. It's amazing how "fans" can cry and beg for a band to get back to being "heavy" again, then when they do and don't sound exactly, perfectly, precisely like they did in 1987 they will blubber about how it's a sellout.
See, but the problem here is that Tom, Mark & Mr. Olsen weren't fans during Metallica's heyday. It's real easy to lose perspective of what metal was like & what made them great back in the day. Most of the "real" Metallica fans already wrote them off when the Black album came out... [Tom, Load & Reload are not even worth mentioning nevermind trying to use them to justify such a lame ass POV!]
And Justice... was an excellent album but could have been a disaster if anyone would've figured out back then that Jason Newsted didn't play a single bass line on the album & for that matter, no one did. If they really wanted to progress as a band after Cliff died(RIP) then they would've hired Les Claypool. Shit! Atleast he would've been able to do some justice to And Justice but, I guess hindsight is 20/20. Hell, they had an opportunity to bring John Bush aboard as well.
Grylls is 100% right! This album still sux major ass even after 4 years! It's a shame that Robert Trujillo is wasting his talent with these hacks..
WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THE MIGHTY....
M E T A L L I C A
Have you seen the '1.5 year in the life of Metallica?' Kirk said there that 'it was all about the energy'. They had that energy, and they were 'the beast of a band' together.
Like a grain of sand in a mushel produces a pearl, so did James' inner discomfort give him that edge in his voice and attitude, and so did the inner tensions in the band push them to seek honesty and energized them while they played.
But now James has evolved, he discovered the inner beauties in life and he cleansed that 'grain of sand'. He's not really angry or afraid anymore, so - why sing about anger or fear? This ... effort that they're making since STanger, looks and sounds so .. wrong.
Like Lars said in 'Some Kind of Monster' film, 'we proved that you can make angry music without negative energy.' WTFK is that? There is no 'positive' or 'negative' - there's just energy or lack of it. And you can easily see on their recent shows that that 'Metallica energy' is totally absent now.
Question; WHY THEY CONTINUE TO COMPROMISE THE UNIQUE AND THE ONE AND ONLY METALLICA'S LEGACY?
Oh, and that James' voice... He blew his vocal cords once while singing 'So What', he admitted it himself. His voice has NEVER sounded gritty since then. (See the 'Stunning Cunts' video of 1998 to hear how he squeaked sometimes, when he was just fresh from that vocal trauma.)
I'd recommend Metallica to put those millions to a good use, discover meditation and a thousand more ways to discover the life and the world from the sides they have never seen. And stop trying to crawl back into the dry husk they have emerged from.
To be honest i don't care if they sound JUST like they did back in the day on this new, but not so new anymore, st. anger job.
What i don't quite understand is how does INTENTIONALLY making music poorly make it good music?? Thats all i hear is.. "Its all good, they wanted it to sound that way".
I hate to be called anything other than a true fan just because i think this album is downright awful.
What makes a "TRUE" fan "TRUE" anyways?
When music gets to a point where i have to force myself to listen to it in order to EVENTUALLY enjoy it... i stop calling it music. In fact i stop listen all together.
I love metallica.... or what they used to be.
Ive tried hard to make myself enjoy this album, but it just ain't happening... does that make me a poor fan?
like i said, i could care less if they sound like they did back in 89'. But I would have liked to see them take there talent in a different direction. people are reading WAY too much into st. anger. so much so that they are pulling excuse after excuse for why this album is better than it really is. Just because Metallica is just about the best rock band ever to exist, doesn't mean they are incapable of releasing a shitty album.
Fubar... You've said it all,my friend!
Even if Metallica wanted to make an album like Master... or Ride... I don't think it could ever happen. They lost the energy & focus, plus, they got so mixed up in the American metal scene that they also lost their frame of reference.
Like o-3ks52 said,"James has evolved, he discovered the inner beauties in life and he cleansed that 'grain of sand'. He's not really angry or afraid anymore, so - why sing about anger or fear?
Chuck Shuldiner(RIP) said it all:
"Those that stood beside me
I'm glad you understand
Behind these written words
I share the simple plan
To hang on to the way that we feel"
Also.. I think they just got weak on their instruments over the years. They never worked on mastering the skills they had & never progressed.
In reponse to the title of the article: yes, they do now. But they're working on a new album, hopefully better than some of their latest sh*t.
cliff is turning in his grave. i under stand that they are in thier 40s and married, and james doesn't drink any more. but they need to change their approach to music if they want to keep 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of their fans. when i saw a picture of the metallica of 83, and the metallica of 03, i couldn't help but cry... P.S. (i didn't cry, i had something in my eye)
"All Within My Hands" is a fucking awesome song!

totally sold out for the cash garb long ago
