Nintendo DS Review: Mega Man ZX Advent

In 2007, we saw six different Mega Man games on Nintendo's handhelds. Five of them were completely forgettable. The last one, the one that wasn't, is Mega Man ZX Advent, the sequel to Mega Man ZX on the DS.

Now, the game suffers from one hell of a cliched storyline, more specifically the generic anime/video game storyline you'll find in a thousand games. There's a mysterious character (or two) with an unknown past, the token good guy who's really an evil bad guy, and rivals who really don't get much explanation for being there other than being rivals, etc.

But outside of that, ZX Advent is fantastic enough that you'll forget about the other five Mega Man games 2007 saw. And that's a good thing.

To begin with, the core game play of the Mega Man series is in full effect here. You'll spend most of your time using the traditional D-pad and button set-up to blast your way through enemies, using the D-pad only for a select few power-ups and for map-related activities, but it's the way they're used that make the difference. The ability to create a custom beam path or to attack enemies on a radar pop-up by tapping them are just two of the ways the touch controls are used in ZX Advent, and they don't feel tacked on, which is the sense one gets from so many Wii and DS games. Yes, I'm looking at you, Wario: Master of Disguise and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow.

To handle the different powers you acquire, you can either jump to the pause screen and use the touch screen to select your power-up and weapon choices, or you can quick change using the buttons and D-pad. I prefer to use the button set-up since it's faster, but having both options is incredibly welcome. And yes, in traditional Mega Man style, different power-ups will help you navigate through the level and beat enemies that come your way, so get used to switching them around a lot.
